چکیده

Background: This study investigated the in vitro activities of naphthoquinones and artemisinin contained extracts obtained from Arnebia densiflora Artemisia annua plants against peripheral blood mononuclear cells infected with Theileria annulata schizonts. For this purpose, n-hexane extract A. petroleum ether methanol were obtained. Methods: Non-infected cultivated 2×106 seeded each well 0.5 ml RPMI 1640 medium. The was tested six times at concentrations 125, 62.5, 15.625, 7.8125 3.9062 mg/ml. also 31.25, 7.8125, 3.9062, 1.9531 mg/ml on PBMCs. A Mann-Whitney U test used to determine differences between control experimental groups. Result: killed both non-infected significant levels (P less than 0.05) compared group all concentrations. had no adverse effect insufficient, only observed a concentration 125 µg/ml. 15.625 µg/ml above 24 hours. At 48 hours, 62.5 In conclusion, can be future vivo studies for Theileriosis these effective

In vitro activity of Artemisia annua L (Asteraceae) extracts against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus Atividade in vitro de extratos de Artemisia annua L (Asteraceae) sobre Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus

The activity of plant extracts on parasites may indicate groups of substances that are potentially useful for controlling Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro action of Artemisia annua extracts on this tick. The concentrations of the sesquiterpene lactones artemisinin and deoxyartemisinin present in plant extracts were quantified via ...

Approaches to vaccination against Theileria parva and Theileria annulata

Despite having different cell tropism, the pathogenesis and immunobiology of the diseases caused by Theileria parva and Theileria annulata are remarkably similar. Live vaccines have been available for both parasites for over 40 years, but although they provide strong protection, practical disadvantages have limited their widespread application. Efforts to develop alternative vaccines using defi...

A quantitative reverse-transcriptase PCR assay for the assessment of drug activities against intracellular Theileria annulata schizonts

Intracellular schizonts of the apicomplexans Theileria annulata and Theileria parva immortalize bovine leucocytes thereby causing fatal immunoproliferative diseases. Buparvaquone, a hydroxynaphthoquinone related to parvaquone, is the only drug available against Theileria. The drug is only effective at the onset of infection and emerging resistance underlines the need for identifying alternative...
